Elwin has worked in the quantity surveying profession since 1987, when he started as a QS clerk in Christchurch. Since then, he has worked in various locations in New Zealand, as well as abroad in London, Hong Kong, Dubai and India.

He first moved to Hawkes Bay in 2002, and started Sharp Consulting Ltd as a consultancy in 2007. In an effort to contribute to a profession that he has benefited so much from, Elwin is an active member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors, where he currently serves as vice-president. He also belongs to several other industry associations.

When away from his desk, Elwin enjoys spending time with family and being out on the golf course.
